Collagen
Collagen is a protein commonly found in various parts of the body. It acts as a link that connects the body’s cells together. Collagen plays an important part in maintaining the radiance and elasticity of the skin, and it also keeps the skin hydrated and firm because it binds with moisture in the skin. Because of its excellent hydration and ability to hold large amounts of water, collagen is frequently used in skin care products, especially moisturizers. Another helpful attribute is that collagen does not make the skin greasy or dry. Because of its natural tendency to create barriers, it protects the skin against the loss of moisture. Also, collagen soothes the skin and does not cause allergic reactions when applied. It is very stable, with a non-irritating scent, and it is faint in color. Approximately 1/3 of the protein forming our bodies is collagen. Collagen is responsible for delivering nutrients to our cells. The reason why a baby’s skin is so smooth is because the human body has more collagen during this period of life than during any other period throughout one’s entire life. After a person turns eighteen, the amount of collagen produced by the body starts to decrease, leading to a loss of elasticity and radiance of the skin, thus causing wrinkles, dark spots and freckles.
